Three very important Writing Tips:
1. Always have someone edit your work; you can overlook your own mistakes. It is absolutely essential to check and recheck what you have written. I never submit any material until I bounce it off another person. When you are writing in your own voice sometimes the mind is quicker then the pen and you may omit words or even think you typed one thing when you wrote another. Choose someone you trust to read your manuscript. Also be able to take constructive criticism. Don’t feel that your dreamed has been rained on if you have to rewrite or even change certain things. Be prepared to make the changes. Don’t be afraid of hard work. If writing was an easy discipline the world would not be able to contain all the books. You are the next generation authors. Prepare to be great.
2. Know what stage your work is in. One of my favorite books that help me when I get stuck on a project is “A Writers Time”, by Kenneth Atchity. This book will help you identify the stage as well as take you through each process. I also recommend the latest editions of, “The Writers Handbook” and The Writers Market”, these reference books are filled with helpful resources that will get you on your way to writing and publishing bliss.
3. Push yourself by working with deadlines. I always refer to my work as from conception to birth. Conception being the moment I conceived the idea and birth being the moment the book arrives from the publishers. It may take years for one of your babies to be born putting yourself on a schedule brings positive results. Having a deadline will enable you to see each specified completion. You may give yourself 2 years to write your first draft and 1 year to do the revisions. Put a date on it. May 30th 2006 I will be finished with the revisions. If you are able to write full time then these times can be shorter. Make it happen!
